Adam Dwight wins January C.A.R.E. Award - 01/23/2017

Adam Dwight, Building Tech at Carus Elementary School, is the January recipient of the Canby Kiwanis C.A.R.E. Award, presented by Kiwanis with help from the local business community and recognized at that month’s school board meeting. Randee Onion nominated Dwight for the award.

Dwight helped a student battling cancer attend class remotely. He worked with the technology department and the ESD to create a robot that allows the student to participate in class through an iPad and a motorized body. This device allows the student to see and interact with his classmates and join discussions.

City selects Kiwanian Sharon Schneider to Light Up the Night - 12/03/2016

The chair of our annual Kiwanis Canby Community Food & Toy Drive, Sharon Schneider, was voted by Canby citizens to throw the switch on Canby's Christmas lights on December 2. Sharon brought her grandkids with her to Light Up the Night in Wait Park, in front of a crowd of more than 1,000. We are so proud of Sharon -- she works tirelessly to make the holidays brighter for children and families!


Sande Ely Wins November C.A.R.E. Award - 12/01/2016

Sande Ely, KEY Program Skills Trainer at Baker Prairie Middle School, is the November recipient of the Canby Kiwanis C.A.R.E. Award, presented by Canby Kiwanis with help from the local business community and recognized at that month’s school board meeting. Erick Welsh nominated Sande for the award because she “has the amazing ability to be compassionate and consistent while still motivating students to achieve their highest potential.” Sande often attends her students’ community and athletic events to provide moral support they may not get otherwise. “I know that countless students owe their success to her steadfast commitment to education in Canby,” explained...


Dianne Holme wins October C.A.R.E. Award - 10/20/2016

Dianne Holme is the October recipient of the Canby Kiwanis C.A.R.E. Award, presented by Canby Kiwanis with help from the local business community and recognized at that month’s school board meeting. Holme is the district nurse and “continues to go above and beyond at all times in her dedication for the welfare of students and families,” according to Director of Student Services Lauretta Manning. Holme recently spent time pursuing scholarships for students to attend a camp for children with diabetes. She frequently works nights and weekends trying to meet the health needs of students.


Cindy Gonzalez wins September C.A.R.E. Award - 09/30/2016

Cindy Gonzalez is the September recipient of the Canby Kiwanis C.A.R.E. Award, presented by Canby Kiwanis with help from the local business community and recognized at that month’s school board meeting. Gonzalez is the building engineer at Eccles and “shows tremendous initiative and demonstrates amazing pride in how our school looks in every area at every moment,” according to Principal Andy McKean. Cindy was instrumental in helping teachers empty their classrooms over the summer for a carpet installation. She also navigated the delivery of 12 pallets of curricular materials.

April’s C.A.R.E. recipient was Colby Scheer, Ninety-One School Counselor, who was recognized for the way in which he cares for each student, providing resources, listening, and helping with students with issues that impact their learning.

Canby Kiwanis and the Canby Business Community have named four R.E.A.C.H. (Resources, Education, and Community Help) Center staff members as the March recipients of the C.A.R.E. Awards. EVELIA JUAREZ, VERONICA MARTINEZ, MAGGIE ROSARIO, and BRENDA SPLITSTOSER have been named the March educators of the month. These four staff members were nominated because they provide a critical role in supporting the district's economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students. They spend hours communicating with students and parents to assist these families in navigating the school system and also connecting them with community services as needed.

RANDEE ONION, 3rd grade teacher at Carus Elementary, has been named the January educator of the month. Randee was nominated for her teaching passion and her tireless devotion to impart a love of learning to her students.

CARLOS ORDAZ CRUZ, 2nd grade teacher at Trost Elementary, has been named the February educator of the month. Carlos is a visiting teacher from Mexico and was nominated for the way in which he helps students feel confident.

Adam Gingerich Wins C.A.R.E. Award - 12/23/2015

Adam Gingerich is the December recipient of Canby Area Recognition of Excellence (C.A.R.E.) award from Canby Kiwanis and Canby businesses.  Gingerich is a 5th grade teacher at Eccles Elementary and was nominated for his innovative, experiential teaching approach. He strives for excellence in his teaching and with his students. Adam goes above and beyond to create lessons using innovative tools that help kids connect their learning with real life experiences. He encourages students to be problem solvers. He implements incentives such as an award for the best mistake of the day. Students are excited to learn and cannot wait to get to school every day to find out what learning adventure awaits!

Canby Kiwanis Awards $15,000 in Scholarships - 06/06/2015

As the 2014-15 school year came to a close, Canby Kiwanis awarded 11 scholarship totaling $15,000 to graduating seniors living in the Canby and North Marion School Districts.

Melanie Boonstra and Marivi Rodriguez Lopez were selected from among North Marion High School applicants. Boonstra received $5,000. The other 10 applicants received $1,000 each.

Canby High School student recipients were Clarice Benz, Brandon Chupp, David Smith, Ethan Patterson, Sara Tro, Olivia Parker, Johnny Rosenblad, and Justin Eggiman. For the first time, a home-schooled student received a scholarship from the club: Matthew Riegg lives in the Canby School District.
