Small-town charm is the name of the game during the Canby Kiwanis Kiddie Capers Parade, the traditional kickoff for the Clackamas County Fair in mid-August. The Canby Kiwanis Club has sponsored the parade since 1948. This year's parade is August 15, 2017, and is open to all Clackamas County children up to the age of 18. There is no charge for participation, and children and accompanying parents in the parade receive free admission to the fair on opening day.

The club encourages those in the parade to dress in costumes and decorate their parade entries. Some of the entry categories include bikes, trikes, wagons and strollers; costumed entries (historical, comic, or fair-themed); pets and small farm animals; plus floats and walking groups. This year's fair theme is "5 Days of Fun!"

The parade starts behind Knight Elementary School and winds its way through Canby before ending at the fairgrounds at the Locust Street Gate. Registration begins at 8 a.m., judging begins at 9 a.m., and the parade starts at 10 a.m. No one may participate in the parade without filling out an entry form.

Members of the Canby Kiwanis Club give each child a participation ribbon and an admission ticket and are on hand at the staging area to help children and parents with questions.

To ensure safety for the children, the Kiwanis Club has a short list of rules for entrants. All children riding a bicycle, tricycle, skateboard, scooter, unicycle or anything on wheels must wear a helmet. Go-karts, motorbikes and lawnmowers will not be allowed in the parade. Water guns and water balloons are also not allowed. The Canby Kiwanis Club reserves the right to reject any entrant it deems dangerous or in poor taste, and asks politicians to refrain from campaigning.
