"C.A.R.E." Educator of the Month Award

In the 2012-13 school year, Canby Kiwanis Club launched a new program to recognize educational excellence in our local school system. The official name of the program is Canby Area Recognition of Excellence Award, or C.A.R.E. Each month an educator or support staff receives a plaque and rewards from local businesses to recognize superior efforts in educating our young people.

A 6-person committee selects the educator or support staff (teachers, principals, administrators and support staff are eligible) from each month's nominees. The committee is composed of 3 Kiwanis Club members and 3 people from the community. The members of the committee currently are Matt Olsen, Debbie Jewell, Marilyn Wood, Trip Goodall, Suzanne Vanamburgh, and Brenda Griffin.

Anyone can nominate an educator for the award. For more information, contact Matt Olsen at 503-263-3777, or use the nomination forms available at www.canby.k12.or.us/ or

Canby High School Key Club

Key Club International is the high school service organization sponsored by Kiwanis International, and the Canby Kiwanis Club sponsors its own affiliated Key Club in Canby High School. For many years, the Canby High Key Club has organized, participated in, and sponsored a number of service activities at the high school and in the community. Perhaps the most well-known in the high school is the annual blood drive, which is sponsored, organized and staffed by the Key Club. This one-day blood drive usually collects more than 100 units of blood, mostly from high school students and staff.

The Key Club has also organized food drives, helped spread bark dust in Canby parks and collected funds for a variety of charities, such as UNICEF and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

The Kiwanis Club helps the local Key Club by sending members to regional conventions and leadership training where they learn how to conduct meetings, plan projects and organize volunteers.

Membership in Key Club is open to any high school student. Meetings are held every two weeks.

Baker Prairie Builders Club

The Canby Kiwanis Club sponsors a Builders Club at Baker Prairie Middle School. Builders Clubs are sanctioned by Kiwanis International as service clubs at middle schools.

Projects of the Baker Prairie Builders Club have included: blood drives; collecting and sorting food for the Holiday Food & Toy Drive of the Kiwanis Club; and collecting funds for UNICEF, Ronald McDonald House and other worthy charities.

The club meets every two weeks during the last half hour of school. The advisor for the club is Lynn Olson, a teacher at Baker Prairie. Students interested in joining Builders Club should see Mrs. Olson.

Terrific Kids

The Canby Kiwanis Club operates the Terrific Kids program in several local elementary schools. Terrific Kids is a sanctioned program of Kiwanis International.

Each month teachers in participating schools select children in their classes to be recognized as Terrific Kids. Selection criteria are up to the teachers. The students selected receive a Terrific Kids certificate and pin and usually get their pictures taken with the school principal or other administrator.

Each month of the school year about 100 children in Canby elementary schools receive the Terrific Kids award, although in some months the awards given have surpassed 350.
